Plumbing Tips For Homeowners

In this blog post I am going to list the some useful plumbing tips for homeowners. Hopefully by reading this blog I can save you some money and help you solve some of the less technical plumbing problems that may arise.

Find your water stop tap

Broken pipes  and plumbing problems can quickly cause flooding within your home so its always sensible to know where you water stop tap is. In the event of a major plumbing problem knowing where you stop tap is can help you prevent further flooding damage to your home.

Check for leaks in your toilet

Take the back of your toilet cistern and add a little food colouring, leave it for 30 minutes and then check to see if any of the coloured water has made its way in to bowl. If it has this indicates that there is a leak between the cistern and the bowl which means you are loosing water, this can usually be fixed by replacing the flush valve which is relatively cheap and easy to do.

Limit use of chemical drain cleaners

Regular use of chemical drain cleaners can reduce the lifespan of your pipes and drains. The best solution is to use a plunger or if you are encountering a really difficult blockage then use a plumbers snake which is a rotating clog removal tools that you can buy from most DIY centres.

Keep an eye on your water usage

When the house is empty and no one is using any water go and check your water meter and make sure that its not ticking over. If it is ticking over this means that you have a water leak, you should check all your taps, showers and toilets to ensure they are not leaking. If you can identify a leak then its best to call a qualified plumber to find the source of the leak.

Boiler Maintenance

You should get your boiler regularly serviced as this ensures that it is running efficiently and safely. Over the long term this will increase the life time of your boiler and it will save you money on your heating bills.

Prevent frozen pipes

I recently wrote a whole blog post about how to prevent you pipes from freezing, you can read the whole thing here.  Stopping you pipes from freezing in the winter will stop them from bursting and causing you a lot of problems and cost a lot of money.

Buy a plunger

Plungers are cheap to buy and easy to use but they will deal with the majority of clogged pipes. So buy a plunger and use it when you need it.
